Based on the 2007 novel by John Preston, The Dig is a British 1930s drama film directed by Simon Stone.  

 

A wealthy landowner Edith Pretty played by Carey Mulligan hires amateur archaeologist Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) to investigate the mounds on her property in England. He and his team discover a ship from the Dark Ages while digging up a burial ground.
